Synology Hyper Backup
Synology Hyper Backup email notifications
Hyper Backup can email you when a task completes or fails. It cannot tell you anything when the task never starts: the NAS is off, the schedule is disabled, the destination is unreachable before the start. This guide shows how to turn on notifications in DSM and have Mail Monitor check that the email arrives, every time.
1. Turn on email notifications in DSM
In DSM open Control Panel, then Notification, Email tab.
- Enable email notifications and pick a provider: Gmail, Outlook or a custom SMTP server.
- Add the mailbox Mail Monitor will read as a recipient.
- Set a recognisable subject prefix, such as [NAS-North]: with several NAS units it is the easiest way to tell them apart.
- Send a test email and check that it arrives.
2. Pick the Hyper Backup events
In the notification rules (the Rules tab or Advanced Settings, depending on your DSM version) find the Hyper Backup entries and enable email for both task completion and errors. Here too you need the success email: its absence is what tells you something stopped.
3. Create the check in Mail Monitor
- Connect the mailbox over IMAP, read-only.
- Sender: the address the NAS sends from. Subject contains: the prefix or the task name.
- The exact success and error wording depends on DSM’s language and version: test the rules on the last 50 emails and pick the words that really appear in your NAS’s emails.
- Expected: the task’s own schedule (daily, some weekdays, every N hours) with a cut-off time and a tolerance.
4. What happens when something goes wrong
- The task fails: the error email arrives and the check turns ERROR.
- The task never starts or the NAS is off: nothing arrives, and at the cut-off time the check turns MISSING.
- The alert goes to you and, if you want, to your customer, from your SMTP and with your logo.
5. The NAS’s other backups
Active Backup for Business, Snapshot Replication and USB Copy use the same DSM notification system: same method, one check per task. For scripts in DSM’s Task Scheduler you can use an API check instead (Premium plan), adding a call to the check URL at the end of the script.
curl -fsS -m 10 --retry 3 <check-URL>Try it on your Synology NAS
The free plan never expires: one mailbox, two email checks. The backup you can’t see today, you’ll see tomorrow.
